  • Art school refurbishment
  • Existing listed structure retained
  • Naturally and well lit activity areas
  • Reconfiguration to allow for more floor space
This project formed a phase in the school’s masterplan of refurbishments, focusing on the Art School to create modern, well-lit teaching spaces for a range of art activities.
While the existing listed structure has been retained, additional floor space has been introduced at second-floor level in the east and west wings, and the two-storey gallery has been adapted to form a large naturally lit activity area.

Rooms have been reconfigured, with new finishes, heating, lighting, fixtures and fittings installed. A notable feature of the scheme is the staircase, enclosed in timber from ground to first floor and formed in open curved steel to the second floor.

Stowe School was originally the country seat of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos and was converted into a school by J. F. Roxburgh in 1923. Amateur architect Clough Williams-Ellis played a key role in adapting the empty 18th-century palace for use as a boarding school, and many established and emerging architects have since contributed to its development.
