Winner of the 2015 RIBA House of the Year on Grand Designs.

The Flint House on the Common Leys area of The Waddesdon Estate represents a uniquely designed two storey dwelling in the shape of a wedge. This project was the second negotiated scheme for Waddesdon in recent years. 

Whilst the basic structure of the house is a piled, reinforced concrete frame, it is clad with natural flint materials in different bands or horizons with a progressive material lightening upwards from dark to chalk white.

This is also reflected in the roof which is formed by a stepped terrazzo tile cladding, that also progressively lighten upwards. Thin framed windows and doors complete the external visage.

Internally the use of natural stone in the form of onyx, serpentine, marble and timber flooring continues the theme with natural concrete, coloured in places where it is exposed under balconies, and purpose-made oak joinery units completing the effect.

Externally the grounds of the house are landscaped and planted featuring diminishing slate cobbled pathways. The scheme incorporates a water feature that winds its way through the house, appearing as a natural extension to an existing adjacent pond.
