13/1/14 - Thatching Progressing Well

Thatcher at work on a Kingerlee SiteWe are currently progressing the roof finishes on our project at a private house in Berkshire. The £1.9m, Listed barn renovation and conversion scheme provides for four semi detached dwellings and associated outbuildings.

Our thatching is progressing well and as can be seen in the photograph, hazel spars are laid in a lattice pattern and held in place with traditional twisted hazel 'pegs'. The horizontal hazel spars are called 'liggers' and the temporary metal pegs are known as 'crooks' to hold the spars in place until the twisted hazel pegs are inserted.
